What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics at Go Green

All crops grown by Go Green Agriculture are organically certified and grown hydroponically. Crops at the Encinitas facility are planted and harvested weekly, every week of the year. They are delivered locally, within hours of harvest.

Plants inside the hydroponics greenhouse grow three feet above the ground—this eliminates the possibility of contamination via water runoff. Additionally, every aspect of the process is controlled (temperature, light, shade, air circulation, etc.) to ensure that the plants can thrive.

It Starts with Soil and a Seed

Our humble hydroponic greens begin with nutritious soil. At Go Green Agriculture, we use a specially made “soil sushi paper,” which holds our soil mix made from soil from our organic recycling system and other nutrients. After seeding, the soil is then irrigated with our reused water. We pride ourselves on using rainwater from our special rooftop water storage, which can hold up to 100,000 gallons.

Growing in the Soil

After two weeks of steady growth in our nourishing soil mix, the greens are transferred to our cutting-edge hydroponic watering system. While continuing to be watered with our reused rainwater, the greens are protected from UV during the day and kept warm at night with our custom-made energy curtain system.

Hydroponic Growing

A month in our hydroponic watering system ensures that our greens are well-watered, healthy, and primed for harvest. We grow 500,000 heads of lettuce per month in ⅓ of the time, using 80% less water. Additionally, Go Green Agriculture grows as many greens on 1 acre as some farmers grow at 25 acres.

Harvested, Packaged, and Shipped

Our greens are then harvested with the roots attached so that the lettuce stays fresh twice as long. Once harvested, the greens are sent to our packing room. Our proprietary packaging equipment can label, box, and wrap the greens, allowing us to fill large orders with ease.
